FX delayed the return of season 4 of Louie from summer 2013 to spring 2014.

Comedian and television creator Louis C.K. said he needs a longer hiatus to recharge and work on Season 4 of the FX series.

C.K. writes, shoots and often edits his own show. He also has a large role in creating the Louie soundtrack.

He said that he hopes to turn the show into something great with more time to develop the next season.

Cable TV networks offer creative teams shorter seasons (13 episodes versus broadcast's traditional 22-episode season), which works to their advantage. FX president John Landgraf said the conversation about giving C.K. more time to work on the next phase of the show led to a "simple yes.""That was my goal from the very beginning -- not to force Louie to adapt his creative instincts to a specific business model or specific structure or story," Landgraf said.

C.K. said that when the show premiered in June, he was usually still shooting and editing and promoting as well.

C.K. planned to begin writing the new season early 2013 and shoot in September. He said he looked forward to the writing, editing and promotion of the show being spaced out a little, timewise.

"The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories, and it's been great to share all this stuff...I want it to be something that comes from somewhere important and funny," C.K. said.

The Emmy winner said his stand-up tour that ended in March 2013 tour would likely be turned into a stand-up special. C.K. bypassed the traditional approach of using ticket brokers for the tour. He made tickets directly available to people and sold seats for a flat $45 fee.

"That's the way I'm going to do it from now on," he said.
