Police Dog Pays Respects: Bids Farewell at Officer's Funeral Placing Paw On Casket [PHOTO'
Figo, a police dog in Kentucky, was pictured saying farewell to his slain trainer at a funeral on Thursday.
The 33-year-old Bardstown police officer was killed five days earlier in an ambush when he stopped to remove debris from an exit ramp, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Although his K-9 companion was not with him at the time of his death, the German Sheppard and his human partner had worked to decrease drugs in the community. At the funeral, Figo bowed his head and placed his paw on his trainer's casket, according to Huffington Post. The image later made its way onto Reddit.
"Ellis knew that Figo was a great partner," said Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin, according to the Daily News. "When you are a canine cop you have one of the best partners in the world. He had the dog for several years and his boys basically grew up with Figo around."
Ellis was the father of tow young boys, 6-year-old Parker and 7-year-old Hunter, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader. McCubbin retired the loyal police dog in order for it to live with Ellis's wife and sons, according to the Daily Mail.
"I am your chief, Jason, but you're our hero and you need to know this chief will not stand down," McCubbin said of the departments determination to find the officer's killer, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. "Jason, my friend, rest easy. We've got it from here."
The department's investigation is ongoing.
