Saturday Night Live cast member Taran Killam has expressed his interest in filling the soon-to-be-vacant Weekend Update anchor position.

"If that's a nod that I were given, it'd be a pretty difficult thing to turn down." Killam told Entertainment Weekly Friday, "It's such an exalted position."

If he accepted the position, Killam would be taking over for current anchor Seth Meyers, who has assumed the position since 2006. Killam admitted that the decsision was ultimately SNL showrunner Lorne Michaels'.

"I'm sure Lorne's thought about that way more than I have, so...in Lorne I trust," he said, "I will miss Seth though."

Meyers is leaving to host his own talk show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, after working on SNL since 2001. The 39-year-old comedian, who was also the show's head writer, will be leaving SNL in December.

Cast members Bill Hader and Fred Armisen gave their official goodbyes at the end of the show's season finale in May. With several veteran cast members departing, Killam is prepared to show off some of his material.

"Now we have to step up," Killam said. "I'm just excited to go have fun, because I'm very close to a lot of the cast members who are left like Bobby Moynihan and Vanessa Bayer. Because there's a little bit more real estate, for lack of a better term, hopefully we'll get to try some stuff that's fun and new."

Killam revealed some of the new sketches he'd like to pitch and try for the next season: "I would definitely love to do some more pre-taped stuff in the new season and try some moves that people haven't even seen yet. I like to think that I've just scratched the surface, just barely cracked open my bag of tricks."

Saturday Night Live returns for its 39th season this fall on NBC, Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
