Specs for the Nexus 7 were released on Wednesday, a week before the updated Google tablet is set to hit stores.

The new Nexus 7 has some stiff competition in the 7-inch tablet world, including the iPad mini. While the Nexus 7 outstrips both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.O and the HP Slate 7 in terms of operating systems, processing power, resolution, storage and rear-facing cameras, the iPad mini is more evenly matched, according to the International Business Times.

Size/Weight and Display

While the current iPad mini has both a larger (7.9 inches vs. 7 inches) and lighter (10.88 oz and 11.04 oz vs. 11.2 oz), the Nexus 7 boasts a much better resolution with a 1920 x 1080 display as opposed to the iPad mini's 1,024 x 768.

Storage and Memory

For those looking for more storage options, the iPad mini would be the way to go. With a selection of tablets with 16GB, 32GB, or 64 GB, the iPad mini provides more room than the 16GB and 32GB Nexus. However, the increase in iPad storage comes at a steep price. As for memory, the Nexus wins definitively with a solid 2GB over the iPad's meager 512MB.

OS and Processor

The Nexus 7 comes bearing the Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon 1.5 GHz as well as the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS. Meanwhile, the iPad mini will still be running OS 6 (Apple will be releasing OS 7 in the fall) and comes with the A5 Dual Core 1Ghz.

Price

The iPad mini is by far the more expensive model. Starting at $329 for a 16GB, the Apple product increases by $100 for each storage level. At only $230 for 16GB and $270 for 32GB, the Nexus 7 is a better option for those hunting for a budget priced 7 inch tablet.
