Bart Bryant, a golfer who famously won the PGA Tour thrice, has died. He was 59.

The PGA Tour's website confirmed the saddening news, saying that Bryant died on Tuesday.

PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan included a statement on the press release which acknowledged Bryant's power that served Tiger Woods the largest defeat of his career.

"The PGA TOUR is saddened by the tragic passing of Bart Bryant and our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. The Bryants have been a part of the PGA TOUR family for over four decades and we are grateful for the impact and legacy he made on our organization and countless communities. Bart will be dearly missed," Monahan said.

The same statement confirmed Bart Bryant's cause of death. According to the post, the golfer died in a car accident on Tuesday, years after losing his first wife, Cathy, in 2017 due to brain cancer.

Meanwhile, his fans and colleagues also remembered his career and legacy in heartfelt posts online.

What Happened to Bart Bryant?

The Polk County Sheriff's Office told PEOPLE that Bryant and his current wife were waiting in an SUV while construction workers walked on State Road 33 in Florida.

However, they were hit by a pickup truck traveling at 60 mph from behind. First responders found him unresponsive.

The golfer died at the hospital while his wife was treated for the injuries she sustained.

The authorities confirmed the ongoing probe into the crash to determine why the 21-year-old driver of the truck failed to stop. The driver also did not have any injuries.

Before his death, Bryant almost retired from golf earlier than expected after sustaining a shoulder injury in the 1990s. But after 10 years, he managed to return and win his first PGA Tour in 2004 at the Valero Texas Open

"One tournament does not make a career. This is just the beginning, that's what I'd like to think," he said at that time.

He went on to win two tournaments in 2005, with his win at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club in 2005 becoming his key to beat Tiger Woods.

Bryant played in 217 tournaments on the PGA Tour since becoming pro in 1986.
