Anne Heche remains in critical condition following her nearly-fatal vehicle accident last week.

Her family has now stated that the American actress is not expected to survive the incident that left her automobile engulfed in flames.

Heche remains in a coma and suffered from "severe anoxic brain damage," which occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen.

"We want to thank everyone for their warm thoughts and prayers for Anne's recovery, as well as the committed staff and great nurses," her family said.

Meanwhile, the actress' publicist expressed gratitude to her followers for "good wishes and prayers."

Police said on Friday that early blood tests confirmed the presence of narcotics in her system, but that more testing was required to rule out any chemicals administered in the hospital.

According to the LAPD, the event is being investigated as a felony driving under the influence traffic collision.

However, TMZ stated that Heche's blood test revealed that she tested positive for fentanyl, which may have been given to her in the hospital to assist manage her pain following the accident.

Anne Heche is presently being treated at West Hills Hospital's Grossman Burn Center and is on life support to assess whether her organs are viable for donation.

The 53-year-old former Ellen DeGeneres lover allegedly became unconscious, falling into a coma, seven days after her blue Mini Cooper drove into a LA home and promptly caught fire.

She apparently suffered a major lung damage that necessitated artificial breathing, as well as burns that would need surgical surgery.

Since then, Heche's condition has deteriorated from "critical" to "dire."

While many people wish Anne Heche a swift recovery, many social media users criticize her for her "selfish behavior."

She is, according to Twitter user CyberRaja, "Not content with destroying her life, she may also take a few others. The only consolation is that she was the only one who died. I have no sympathy for folks who drive drunk."

When someone advised the Twitter user to sympathize with her children, another chimed in, "She crashed into someone's house, driving like 80 in a quiet neighborhood."

"What was going on in that woman's head?" wondered another.

Despite the hatred, Heche is being protected.

On the platform, DarrenTVS stated, "Children have lost a parent. Her loved ones and relatives also lost her. This is why I'm dealing with the level of vitriol directed at her. It's a depressing end. Be considerate."
