Christopher Abbott Reacts to Baby News With Aubrey Plaza for First Time: “It’s Very Exciting”

The Poor Things star appeared on the Today show on May 18 and broke his silence on one of Hollywood's most unexpected pregnancy announcements — his and Aubrey Plaza's first child together. The revelation came just days after Abbott turned heads at the 79th Annual Tony Awards "Meet the Nominees" press event at Sofitel New York on May 14, where he was celebrated for his Broadway nomination alongside the baby news buzz surrounding the couple.
When co-host Jenna Bush Hager began congratulating him on the Today show, Abbott feigned annoyance, quipping: "I thought — for my Tony nom." He quickly clarified he was joking, adding: "No, no, I'm kidding. I know, I know. It's just too much. There's too much going on."
Abbott is currently nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play for his role as Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman on Broadway — which is what brought him to the Sofitel press event earlier this month.
In all seriousness, he added of the pregnancy: "That's very nice, thank you very much. It's very exciting."
How It All Began
A rep for Aubrey confirmed on April 7, 2026, that the My Old Ass actress was expecting her first baby with Christopher. Soon after, she shared insight into her pregnancy journey on a SmartLess podcast episode released April 20: "Well, there's a baby inside of me. Today was a big day. I went to the doctor's today." On motherhood, she added: "I've always wanted to see what that's all about. It just seems so interesting, that whole thing."
The pregnancy was confirmed by People in April 2026, with sources revealing the couple expects the arrival of their first child this fall following an emotional period. Plaza previously experienced the sudden death of her ex-husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, in January 2025, four months after their quiet separation.
Their History Together
Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott's onscreen relationship dates back to 2019, when the pair starred as a married couple in the second act of the indie film Black Bear. A few years later, they shared the stage in the 2023 Off-Broadway production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, with Aubrey describing Christopher as her ideal scene partner: "He cares but he also doesn't care; it's the best recipe for me."
The baby is expected to arrive this fall. Congratulations to the couple! 💛
