The first trailer for Divergent, the Neil Burger directed sci-fi action film starring Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Maggie Q, and Ashley Judd, was released at the MTV VMAs on Aug. 25.

The sci-fi action film is Summit entertainment's next big YA franchise. The film is based on Veronica Roth's novel of the same name, and is the first in a trilogy.

Set in the future in Chicago, the story centers around Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) and the challenges she faces to belong to a certain faction of this new-age society. The society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent). Every year, all sixteen-year-olds take an aptitude test that decides what faction makes for the best fit, after which they must decide whether to remain with their family or transfer to a new faction. Prior chooses to fight to belong with Dauntless. Theo James portrays the character of Four, an instructor in the Dauntless community, and Miles Teller plays Peter, who is also being initiated into the same faction as Prior.

Kate Winslet has been cast in an antagonistic role. She will be playing Jeanine, the leader of the Erudite.

Roth's second novel, Insurgent, released in May last year, and the third and last novel of the trilogy, Allegiance, will hit shelves in October.

The film is set for release in Mar. 21 next year.
