Katherine Heigl will be returning to television in a new CIA drama on NBC.

The former Grey's Anatomy star has signed on to play the lead role in the untitled CIA drama, according to a Monday report by The Hollywood Reporter. The drama is about a young CIA officer who gets chosen to become the president's daily briefer.

Heigl, who is returning to television after departing from Grey's Anatomy in 2010, is excited about the new project.

"I have been passionate about, and enthralled by, this project from the moment [executive producers] Hank [Crumpton], Rodney [Faraon] and Bob [Simonds] brought it to me over a year ago," Heigl said. "The story is not only compelling and intelligent but a look behind the curtain at the CIA we haven't seen before in film or television."

The actress said she was honored to be developing this story and thrilled to be partnered with NBC in bringing it to life.

"NBC has been a true partner in their passion and support for the show that we've dreamed of making, and I could not be happier about joining forces with them," Heigl continued. "Together, with our brilliant writer Alexi Hawley, I believe we are going to make great television!"

Heigl will also executive produce the series. This is her first television role since Grey's Anatomy after starring in a series of romantic comedies, such as Killers, New Year's Eve and The Big Wedding.

A premiere date has not been scheduled for the untitled CIA drama, but it likely will not premiere until at least the 2014-2015 TV season.
