As The Mentalist wraps up the Red John story and the show moves on to new territory, some characters are going to be left in a lurch.

Among these are Agents Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti). Their impending departure was announced several weeks ago, but the reason and the timing of their exit still remain a mystery.

While series creator Bruno Heller has previously stated that the couple will have a happy ending - they will be getting married during the first half of the season - some fans still fear that the pair will lose their lives in the quest to bring down the notorious serial killer.

There has been no comment officially renouncing this theory, but a recent statement to Heller may point to Rigsby and Van Pelt's survival.

"The hunt for Red John is reaching its climax," Heller said, according to TV Line. "The CBI is thrown into turmoil... so Rigsby and Van Pelt - and Cho - are forced to find new ways to be in the world."

Those who are wondering when the two CBI agents will be getting married may want to keep and eye out for season 6's third episode. Titled "Wedding in Red," the episode will see the team investigate an incident at a Napa wedding and, according to Spoiler TV, Van Pelt and Rigsby will take a walk down the aisle.

The Mentalist returns to CBS on Sept. 29.
