Supernatural's Dean will be in a dark place when the series returns in January.

The ultimate ill-effects of his decision to let an angel into his brother have come to pass and, between the death of Kevin Tran (Osric Chau) and the complete possession of Sam (Jared Padalecki), the elder Winchester brother (Jensen Ackles) will be blaming himself when the second half of season 9 kicks off with Road Trip.

"It really does break him up - frankly, as it did us," said producer Jeremy Carver of Kevin's death, according to Entertainment Weekly. "And Dean finds himself, I think, a bit unmoored by this with really no one but himself to blame. And as we know, Dean's go-to is blaming himself anyway. And the fact that he's right this time, hits him hard. And I think we'll find him struggling with this for quite a few episodes."

However, Carver remains adamant that the CW drama will not sit around and wallow in self-pity. Instead, both the story and the Winchesters must keep moving forward. Dean's decisions to stop the trials and then to try and heal Sam via Ezekiel/Gadreel will continue to direct the course of his story.

"He made these two crucial decisions that affected the boys' mythology and to watch particularly the second one turn into a heartbreaking failure is really what's going to be driving Dean from here on out in the season, starting with he's going to do whatever it takes to track down this angel and eject him from Sam," Carver explained. "And that's going to lead him to making alliances that he never thought he'd be forced to make. But he'll do anything, basically, to try to right what he, I guess, considers one of the biggest mistakes he's ever made."
