Rumors began circulating that Cristiano Ronaldo secretly married longtime girlfriend Irina Shayk when he called her his "wife" after being named the FIFA World Player of the Year for the second time on Monday.

The 28-year-old Real Madrid player was joined by his mother and sister, Russian model girlfriend, 28, and his three-year-old son Cristiano Junior as he claimed the coveted Ballon d'Or at the ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland.

Overwhelmed by the honor, Ronaldo struggled to control his emotions and began crying as he took to the stage alongside his child to accept his prize.

Wearing a Dsquared2 grey tuxedo, Ronaldo was honored after scoring 66 goals in 56 appearances for club and country Portugal in 2013. He reclaimed the trophy he last held in 2008.

In his emotional acceptance speech he thanked his "wife" Shayk, who he has been dating since 2010.

"There are no words to describe this moment," he began his speech by saying.

"First of all I have to say a great thanks to all of my team-mates with the club and the national team. Without all their efforts it would not have been possible," he said, according to a translation from Mirror. "I am very happy. It is very difficult to win this award. Everybody that has been involved with me on a personal level I have to thank. My wife, my friends, my son. It is a tremendously emotional moment."

The soccer player took the honor from Lionel Messi, who has won for the past four years. Talking about the fellow athlete, Ronaldo said, "I have a very professional relationship with Messi, he's a player I admire."

"I'm happy to compete with the best. I'm going to try win things with Madrid and the national team, and I hope to be here (again next year) and win."

Ronaldo's reps have not commented on the engagement rumors.
