The next season of American Horror Story will very likely not be contemporary, according to FX.

John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks, spoke with critics at the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday, revealing a few details about the upcoming fourth season of American Horror Story. Landgraf is presuming that season 4 will not be contemporary like the current Coven setting.

"I think it'll probably be a period piece again, I don't think it'll be contemporary," Landgraf said. "I know that most of the current cast will be returning in some form, though I don't know what characters they'll be playing. I'm waiting for [Murphy] to tell me. ... Every season has an opportunity to sell a new setting and new characters and a new tone to the audience."

While both the first season and Coven were set in modern times, the show's second season, Asylum, was set in the 1960s.

Landgraf's comments that most of the current Coven cast will return for American Horror Story season 4 are good news for fans of this season. In addition to regular players like Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy and Evan Peters, Coven has also featured the likes of acting legends like Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Patti LuPone.

American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy has approached both Bates and Bassett to return for another season, and both are reportedly very open to staying on.

American Horror Story season 4 will air in fall 2014.

American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
