Bin Laden Death Photos: Judicial Watch Group Insisting Disturbing Images Of EX Al Qaeda Leader Be Released? VIDEO
Pictures of Osama Bin Laden's body are set to be destroyed, according to the email orders from former Army Vice-Admiral William McRaven are released.
Conservative activist Judicial Watch Group obtained the emails and released them on Feb. 11, and members of the group are insisting the photos be released to the public instead.
In the May 2011 raid and killing of Osama Bin Laden, pictures were taken as evidence of the events. Shortly afterwards, McRaven allegedly sent emails out instructing that photos be destroyed.
"At this point-all photos should have been turned over to the CIA; if you still have them detory immediately," his emails reportedly read.
The watch group is now insisting the photos be released to the public since the special ops head failed to give them to The Associated Press when they requested photographic evidence of the raid back in 2011.
President of the Judicial Watch Group,Tom Fitton said that the email "is a smoking gun, revealing both contempt for the rule of law and the American people's right to know," in a statement released Monday.
Under the Freedom of Information Act, the government is required to hand over any requested information. However, The Associated Press was given blacked out emails, without much useful information.
The newly obtained emails pose a problem for the government Special Ops commander, as the watch group now has evidence that though the request was denied, pertinent information was left out and ultimately compromised.
In 2011, the CIA responded in a statement reported by the New York Daily News, "Records of a CIA operation such as the raid, which were created during the conduct of the operation by persons acting under the authority of the CIA director, are CIA records."
