Derek's Sister to Return This Season

Series star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey, posted a photo of the two smiling on Instagram with the caption: "BURKE IS BACK #itsallgoodinthehood #burkeisback."

Washington later posted a Twitter picture of himself in scrubs and revealed that the second day of filming was complete.

Arizona & Callie 'Making Their Way' But 'Not Uncomplicated'? 

ABC announced that Washington would return to the show for an episode in May to help wrap up the storyline of Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh).

"I read the script last night," Washington recently told Access Hollywood Live. "The script is so amazing... it will blow you away... I was not expecting this."

Washington's return comes seven years after his character was written out on the season 3 finale in 2007 when Preston left Cristina at the altar. He was let go from the ABC show that season after he allegedly used a homophobic slur to refer to his former and openly gay costar T.R. Knight.

"It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should," said show creator Shonda Rhimes in a statement. "Burke is vital to that journey - he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang."
