Revenge has made flash-forwards and annual premiere tradition, but the ABC series is preparing to break with the past after it came walking though the door during the season 3 finale.

The surprising introduction of Emily/Amanda's (Emily VanCamp) allegedly deceased father during "Execution" put an entirely new twist on the series, and showrunner Sunil Nayar wants to keep the audience on uneven footing.

"[The finale allowed us to] shake things up a little bit and do the unexpected and that said, I adore the flash-forwards," Nayar explained to E!. "But there's a chance to shake it up from the very first frame of season four, so fans think, 'OK, this is a show that I love, but it's going to be different and surprise me.' There's a chance we might not do it."

However, a format change isn't the only way in which Nayar plans to keep viewers guessing - the exec is also toying with the ultimate fate of Conrad (Henry Czerny). Supposedly knocked off by David Clarke (James Tupper), Conrad may actually still have some life left in him.

"You know what, we're beginning to talk about next season, and we haven't seen him actually die," Nayar told TV Line. "I think there's that little tug of me thinking, 'I don't want to lose Henry [Czerny], and that character's so good,' but you never know. I don't want to say anything definitively because this is Revenge, but he's not doing super well lying on the road there."
