Meriam Ibrahim Re-Arrested: Sudan Christian Mother Captured By 'Agents Of Fear' While Trying To Flee [VIDEO]
Meriam Ibrahim, the 27-year-old woman who was sentenced to death and then acquitted following international outrage, has been re-arrested Tuesday.
Ibrahim was leaving Sudan through a Khartoum airport when she was abruptly arrested without cause.
According to NBC News, her lawyer Eishareef Ali Mohammad claimed that 50 men rushed to arrest Ibrahim at the airport, but refused to cite a reason for her re-arrest. She was taken away with her husband Daniel Wani, who refused to abandon her, and their two children to a detention center. Wani is an American citizen and had been working to get his wife released since her initial arrest.
"They [security forces] knew she had been cleared by the court," said Mohammad, "But they have re-arrested her. I don't know why."
The arrest comes just one day after The Guardian reported Ibrahim's release. The young woman had originally been arrested and sentenced to 100 lashes for alleged adultery by men claiming to be family members, though she denied knowing them.
Ibrahim was then sentenced to death for refusing to convert back to Islam after marrying a Christian man. Her young son Martin resided in Omdurman Women's Prison with her and Ibrahim gave birth to her second child, Maya, while shackled in her prison cell.
Outrage across the world ensued, generating support from Tony Blair, Hilary Clinton, and Jesse Jackson.
Ibrahim was released Monday as a result of a court order. She'd been arrested back in August 2013.
The reason for her arrest Tuesday is uncertain at this time.
