A new report suggests that The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies can have a different ending from that in Tolkien's book.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Is A "Psychological Thriller," Says Peter Jackson

As the plot rumors of the final in the trilogy have been doing the rounds, the Latin Post raises the question of the film's ending. The media website speculates that there could be two possible endings for the movie, one in which he runs with an epilogue and ties a neat bow or chooses to leave fans wanting more leading them right back to the Lord of the Rings with a cliffhanger.

The report also brings up the issue of the length of the movie, stating that maybe Peter Jackson might quell his ambition to strike the three-hour mark, which has failed to do with the first two films in the trilogy.

Unreleased Footage From Lord of the Rings To Be Included In The Battle of the Five Armies?

Recently, a striking new tapestry of the action in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies was revealed.

The visuals were exclusively unveiled by Entertainment Weekly and give fans glimpses into various action sequences, and main plot points of the movie. There is the Dragon of Smaug laying siege to Lake Town, which goes up in flames, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) is seen despairing on his throne, and Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) wears an anxious look on his face. In another bit Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) is seen reaching out to an ailing, possibly dying, Gandalf (Ian McKellen).

The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies also features on the cover of Empire magazine's September issue.

To bring out the much anticipated duel between Bard the Bowman, played by Luke Evans, and the dragon Smaug, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, the magazine has two covers. One features the dragon while the other showcases Bard, and the covers are being pitted as "Bard vs. Smaug."

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will hit theaters on December 18.
