It is most definitely just the humor of Robert Downey Jr. playing around, but could the actor be serious about bringing in this director to do the next Iron Man movie and would Marvel allow it?

Robert Downey Jr. Says There Is A Future For Iron Man Being Discussed At Marvel

In an interview with Deadline on Thursday to promote his new film, The Judge, Downey Jr. talked about the future of Iron Man and said that he has one name he wants to direct the movie: Mel Gibson.

When he was asked if he was serious, Downey responded with "Why not? That movie would be bananas."

Robert Downey Jr. Still Can't Just Say He Won't Be Iron Man Anymore

He went on to talk about the franchise saying that "to me, it comes down to what's the half-life of people enjoying a character? It's different on TV, where you expect the longevity over seasons while movies get a two or three year break. Marvel keeps stepping up its game, and I appreciate the way Kevin Feige and all the creatives there think."

"They are as in the creative wheelhouse as any great studio has been at any point. So it becomes a matter of, at what point do I cease to be an asset to what they're doing, and at what point do I feel I am spending so much time either shooting or promoting these films that I'm not actually able to get off the beachhead and do the kind of other stuff that is good for all of us."

Marvel seems to want to keep Downey Jr. around because he is the face of the studio and brings in the big bucks like no other star, but with his age going up and the requirements the movies have, it seems unlikely that he would want to do too many solo acts anymore.

Here's to hoping for an Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy team-up film.
