Eva Green will be returning as Miss Vanessa Ives for Showtime's second season of Penny Dreadful a changed woman, but the struggle against darkness is far from over.

Big Changes For 'Penny Dreadful' This Week

Vanessa fought against demonic possession and the pull of her own dark nature during the Victorian supernatural drama's first season and as the series moves forward she is going to have to decide who she wants to be.

"She's a very endearing character in that she has lots of secrets," explained Green in an interview for E! on Wednesday.

"She wishes she could have a normal life and she doesn't know how to deal with all her demons," added the actress, who was speaking both literally and metaphorically. Vanessa has struggled with literal demons on the program, but she has also struggled with the personal guilt she feels for having betrayed her best friend Mina, who was Sir Malcolm's (Timothy Dalton) daughter. Sir Malcolm was forced to kill the vampyric Mina to save Vanessa at the end of the first season, which has certainly changed the dynamic of their relationship moving forward.

As for the actual demons, those will prove to be just as challenging.

"She doesn't know if she needs to have those demons exorcised," explained Green, "Or maybe she could just live with those demons."

The actress refused to reveal which decision her character will ultimately make, though she did dish on the evolving relationship between Vanessa and her good friend Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), who is secretly a werewolf.

"In season two the relationship between Ethan and Vanessa is going to very much be explored," Green assured fans. "It's a very beautiful relationship."

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
