While the Spell of Scattered Sight takes over Storybrooke on ABC's Once Upon a Time, the show's star is defending the appearance of another curse to fans who might be tired of them.

Jennifer Morrison, who plays Emma on the fantasy series, spoke with Entertainment Weekly while filming for next week's episode of Once Upon A Time about the curse. The show has seen many curses in its four seasons, with this particular one making everyone turn on each other.

Morrison justified the many curses that have been thrown at the characters in Storybrooke as metaphors for what life throws at us.

"Fairy tales are not literal," she said. "They are very metaphorical, and they are very representative of other things."

She compared the various curses to some of the obstacles that life hands us, including "illness, death, exams, fights with loved ones, breakups."

As such, "all those things are, in real life, what would be a curse or spell in Storybrooke. Yes, we have to bond together to fight these major things, but it's just like a family has to bond together to fight cancer, or deal with a death in the family, or a parent losing a job, or not getting into the school you want to."

Part of the message of Once Upon a Time, Morrison explained, is in the battling through adversity together.

"Whether it's a good battle or a bad battle, you're going to fight together, and that's what we all have to hang onto," she asserted. "That's the only way I can see it. Otherwise, if you take it too literally, you're like, 'Well, this is kind of crazy.'"

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
