This week Joseph Morgan sat down and talked about how The CW eventually came to make The Originals and what it's like playing a "sociopath" like Klaus Mikaelson.

The Infamous Mikael Reveals Epic Plan In New 'The Originals' Preview

"It was really them [the fans] that started to entertain the idea of a spin off [to The Vampire Diaries] by maiming trailers on YouTube for The Originals," revealed Morgan in an interview with The Laterals on Sunday. "Neither the producers nor myself had communicated our shared desire to make this show so I think I have the fans to thank for forcing the issue."

Now in its second season, The Originals has really entrenched itself in the Mikaelson family history, which has allowed Morgan to explore the depths of his character even further. "He is desperate for the love and adoration that was lacking in his childhood, this makes him prone to fits of rage that are fueled by his bestial side."

"He is a sociopath, unpredictable, and deadly… but most of all Klaus is lonely," noted Morgan. "Whenever he gets close to forming a meaningful bond he destroys it, fearful of the vulnerability it exposes in him… Still, there is Hope."

Of course Hope is Klaus' baby daughter, the one true thing which he has allowed himself to connect with away from all the jealousy, suspicion, hatred, and resentment.

The humble and humorous Morgan seems to share little with his charismatic though murderous hybrid he portrays and when asked where he finds his inspiration the actor declared that it comes from a number of places.

"I try to experience as much as I can so I can draw from it. I'm curious," he admitted. "Inspiration can be found everywhere if you open yourself to it."

The Originals returns on The CW to continue with its second season on Monday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
