Actress Mayim Bialik was seriously injured in a car accident Wednesday when her vehicle was hit by another carrying three Chilean tourists. The incident took place as Bialik was driving her white Volvo on Hollywood Boulevard, PEOPLE magazine has reported.

The crash caused serious injury to one of her fingers.

TMZ reported that she was in danger of losing her finger. Sources told the website that "her finger was almost completely severed ... it was just hanging there." And that there was "tons and tons of blood everywhere."

The "Big Bang Theory" star had her husband issue a statement on Twitter to assure her fans her finger was not being amputated.

"(husband typing) In pain but will keep all my fingers. If u wanna see pre accident me watch The Soup tonight lol."

Bialik was taken to a local hospital following the accident to treat the injury.

The crash caused a "severe injury to her left thumb" LAPD Sgt. Monte Houze told PEOPLE.

"From what I was told, there was a lot of blood at the scene," he added.

The tourists from Chile were not ticketed or arrested.

Bialik plays a scientist on CBS' hit show "Big Bang Theory." The appearance started as a guest role and she eventually became a regular on the weekly series. She was nominated last month for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

She is known for playing the lead quirky teen on NBC's "Blossom" in the 1990s. Before "Big Bang Theory" she appeared in the movie "Beaches" with Bette Midler and has done voiceovers for several cartoons including this year's "Scooby Doo! Music Of The Vampire."
