Vivek Shah: Aspiring Actor Arrested for $4 Million Extortion Plot Against Hollywood Producer Weinstein
Aspiring actor Vivek Shah has been arrested for making death threats against Oscar-winning producer Harvey Weinstein and his family in a $4 million extortion plot. Federal agents arrested Shah, 25, who allegedly sent threatening letters to Weinstein and other millionaire tycoons, which included a coal magnate, oil executive and an owner of an NHL team.
According to ABC News, in a sworn affidavit, Postal Inspector Joshua Mehall said that "each of these letters contained a threat to kill named members of the recipient's family unless a large sum of money was wired to an offshore bank account."
Shah had small parts in "Bones," "Outsourced" and "The Dark Knight."
According to his Facebook profile and IMDb page, Shah describes himself as an "entrepreneur" and film producer. He posted some photos taken with Hollywood hotshots such as Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Ozzy Osbourne, Sofia Vergara and Zach Galifianakis.
Shah, who is a native of Akron, Ohio, was arrested by federal agents on August 10 at his parent's home located in a Chicago suburb. His arrest comes after he was named in a U.S. District Court complaint for sending threatening interstate communications. He may face up to 20 years in jail if convicted.
Hollywood producer Weinstein produced "Shakespeare in Love", which won an Academy Award. He also received seven Tony Awards for producing top musicals "The Producers, Billy Elliot the Musical", and "August: Osage County."
