The Oscar nominated star made an appearance at the Critics' Choice Awards ceremony last Thursday where she made a speech in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday on how there should be more equality in Hollywood.

On Tuesday, CBS posted the details on how Chastain wanted the Hollywood executives and actors to "stand together against homophobic, sexist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic and racist agendas."

While some of the public may have thought she was creating a good cause, it turns out that the reaction that the actress received after this speech can only be described as "strange."

"I've had really terrible people who are racist comments on the speech and say really terrible things," she told The Associated Press. "I'm understanding that some people in this world, how much hate they can have."

Chastain them pointed out that some people misinterpreted what her speech was supposed to represent and how diversity can be reflected.

"Some people had taken my speech and then made it about awards- like SAG Awards or Oscars. That's not what my speech was about," she said. "To me awards are just a reflection. It's just a symptom of the disease and the disease is in the industry. If we had more diversity in our films it would be reflected in diversity in the nominees."
