Girls just want to have fun, and Betsey Johnson is no exception.

Cyndi Lauper belted out her most famous hit Tuesday night at the conclusion of Betsey Johnson's spring 2013 show at New York Fashion Week, a fantastical fete that celebrated both Johnson's 70th birthday and her first collection since her bankruptcy in April.

The show featured a line of dresses that will be available in department stores and boutique retailers for between $99 and $249, and the legendary designer closed out the show with her signature cartwheel and split on the runway. The clothes were unified by a princess theme and the bright colors, tulle and dramatic hair and make-up that have become hallmarks of Johnson's work.

The party was packed, with some guests waiting an hour or more for entry into the rented space on 42nd Street where the collection premiered.

The show was the first for Johnson since she lost control of her 63 boutiques when the recession forced her to file for bankruptcy. The rights to the Betsey Johnson brand are now owned by Steve Madden Ltd., which continues to sell products branded with the label online and through wholesale.

Though this week's party was billed as a birthday celebration for Johnson, her actual birthday is Aug. 10, 1942. Johnson founded her fashion house in 1978, and the brand took off, sending her clothes and accessories to stores across the nation and solidifying Johnson's over-the-top image as an iconic part of fashion history.
