Evan Peters is frequently the male lead on FX's American Horror Story but with Jessica Lange out of the picture, could he become the sole lead of the show?

Will Finn Wittrock Be Promoted To New Lead of 'American Horror Story'?

Lange has announced that she was leaving American Horror Story after the most recently ended season, Freak Show. She has been the unequivocal star of the show since Asylum, which leaves quite a hole in the show's dynamic. Will Peters potentially step into the role of new lead for season 5 this fall?

Peters has stood out as a fan favorite since the very first season of American Horror Story. His performance as troubled teen Tate Langdon captivated viewers at the time, many of whom were taken by his doomed romance with Violet (Taissa Farmiga).

He would later go on to star in Asylum as Kit Walker, an inmate at Briarcliff asylum who was accused of being a serial killer. In the next season, Coven, his role was reduced, playing Kyle Spencer, a popular college kid who died and was then sewed back together by the witches. The latest season, Freak Show, saw him in a more noteworthy role, playing "Lobster boy" Jimmy Darling.

Peters has been a fan favorite through all four seasons of American Horror Story and while his star is rising, he could conceivably lead the next season in the fall. It remains to be seen what AHS co-creator Ryan Murphy and company have in store, though.

American Horror Story season 5 returns in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific premiere date.
