National Voter Registration Day Urges Americans Not to Lose Their Right to Elect President
National Voter Registration Day has seen volunteers across the nation take to the streets and online to urge people to register to vote in this year’s upcoming elections.
The “National Voter Registration Day” is a campaign backed by trade unions, human rights groups, as well as a number of companies. The campaign highlights one day, Sept. 25, to remind people everywhere to ensure they do what they need to do to ensure they are eligible to vote this year.
That means people should ensure they fill out the necessary voter registration forms and submit them on time.
The campaign promotes that in 2008 6 million voters who were eligible to vote did not do so after they failed to register. Many were unaware how to register to vote, and others simply missed the registration deadline and along with it the opportunity to vote.
Americans on the whole are great supporters of the right to vote. Over the years many movements have fought for various groups to be given the right to vote and to elect into office as part of a fully functional democracy. However, in the current political climate some have also become disillusioned with politics in general and in particular with the candidates up for election this time.
However, people are still be urged to make sure their vote counts and is not wasted.
The current campaign is non partisan and does not promote any party or candidate over another: “We don't support or endorse any candidate or issue. We're strictly non-partisan ... We're about democracy. We don't care how you vote, just that you do vote!”
However, according to most polls the main groups least likely to turn out at the polls are the young and the minority groups - the groups the Democrats see as most likely to vote for them. So President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have been tweeting reminder urging people to register to vote and ensure they make their opinion known.
