Just a few weeks ago on The Young and the Restless it seemed as though Jack (Peter Bergman) went from marrying Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) to being held captive by Kelly (Cady McClain), but it turns out Bergman is actually playing two roles now on the soap.

He is still playing Jack, but he is also portraying Fake Jack, which has actually been going on even longer than a few weeks ago, however, the soap is really digging into the doppelganger storyline now.

Last Thursday, TV Insider revealed some insight on the doppelganger storyline straight from executive producer Jill Farren Phelps and the head writer/co-executive producer Chuck Pratt Jr.

Pratt Jr. revealed he has "the advantage of knowing where the story is going."

"The whole reason for it is that I looked at Peter Bergman and Eric Braeden [Victor] and saw two great actors, two titans who are the tent poles of Y&R, who needed to be challenged, with a big, strong story, one that would be based on Victor's long-time desire and need to beat Jack once and for all," Pratt Jr. explained.

He described the doppelganger storyline as "an umbrella story that could affect every character."

The head writer added that Bergman's character "was becoming little more than the happy-go-lucky businessman all the women wanted to sleep with" while Braeden's character "was becoming a caricature," which wasn't adding to their stories at all.

According to Pratt Jr., "the doppelganger story" can be used again and again.

"It can go away and maybe come back again down the line if we don't kill off one or the other," he said.

Phelps admitted she felt "fear" initially over Pratt Jr.'s idea, but it appears to be working out well.

The Young and the Restless airs on weekdays at 12:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
