Hamas Attacks Israel, Rockets & Airstrikes; Explosions Heard In Tel Aviv
Israeli soldiers moved toward the Gaza Strip after nearly 150 Palestinian rockets invaded the country killing three people on Thursday.
Three rockets hit the populated area of Tel Aviv and the fighting between the two sides do not show to be stopping soon, with 15 Palestinians already dead in two days, according to CBS. Gaza militants launched the rockets in retaliation for Israel's killing of the Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari in an airstrike on Gaza on Wednesday, the report added.
Earlier Thursday, a rocket landed in an open area of Rishon Lezion, a city south of Tel Aviv, but there no damages or injuries were reported.
"No government would tolerate a situation where nearly a fifth of its people live under a constant barrage of rockets and missile fire, and Israel will not tolerate this situation," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. "This is why my government has instructed the Israeli Defense Forces to conduct surgical strikes against the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza. And this is why Israel will continue to take whatever action is necessary to defend our people."
Israel's defenses include a network of interceptor missiles placed in different border locations, known as the Iron Dome. It intercepted a number of missiles Thursday but many still got through. Arabic media reported that a total of 13 Palestinians were killed in at least 80 Israeli airstrikes this week. Five of those killed were said to have been Hamas militants, including Jabari, according to CBS.
Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi said Thursday his country supports the Palestinians against what he called Israeli aggression, The New York Times noted.
"The Egyptian people, the Egyptian leadership, the Egyptian government, and all of Egypt is standing with all its resources to stop this assault, to prevent the killing and the bloodshed of Palestinians," Morsi said in nationally televised remarks before meeting with senior ministers. "Israelis must realize that we don't accept this aggression and it could only lead to instability in the region and has a major negative impact on stability and security in the region."
