Mr. Bean Character Retiring: Comedian Rowan Atkinson Opens Up About Future of Childish Character
Mr. Bean seems to be retiring. Rowan Atkinson, the actor who gave life to the worldwide famous clumsy character described by himself as "a child in a grown man's body", suggested in an interview that he doesn't plan to perform as Mr. Bean as much.
The 57-year-old comedian suggested to UK's The Daily Telegraph, that he is going to concentrate on serious theatre roles.
"The stuff that has been most commercially successful for me - basically quite physical, quite childish - I increasingly feel I'm going to do a lot less of," he told the Daily Telegraph's Review on Saturday.
"Apart from the fact that your physical ability starts to decline, I also think someone in their fifties being childlike becomes a little sad. You've got to be careful," he explained.
In the interview Atkinson admitted that since he portrayed Mr. Bean, it has been difficult for people to see him outside of the role. However, he is preparing to appear in a West End revival of Quartermaine's Terms by Simon Gray, reports the Telegraph.
"Mr. Bean" debuted in 1990 gaining large audiences in the UK and the entire world, including 18.74 million for the 1991 episode "The Trouble With Mr. Bean" in the UK. The series has been the recipient of a number of international awards, including the Rose d'Or.
He last performed as Mr. Bean at the 2012 London Olympics.
