The San Antonio Spurs will kick off a six-game road trip when they take on the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. The Spurs are coming off a 1-2 homestand, which includes a 92-87 heart-breaking defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers. The team fell during the final moments of regulation after Chris Paul sank a short jump shot with just 24.7 seconds remaining.
San Antonio is currently experiencing a lack of depth after losing another one of their key players to injury, Stephen Jackson. The veteran suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right pinkie finger and is expected to be out four to six weeks.
Jackson was starting just his second game along with fellow forward Kawhi Leonard, who is also out with quadriceps tendinitis. The void left by his loss was apparent. After he was removed in the first quarter, the Spurs ended up sporting a minus-10 rebounding deficit, tying them for their second worst mark of the NBA season.
Coach Gregg Popovich spoke to ESPN about the disappointment he felt regarding his team's lack of aggression in their defeat to the Clippers.
"Of all our games, this game was in the soft category," coach Gregg Popovich said. "We never had five guys that competed hard enough to win the basketball game. The Clippers took it with their aggressiveness and their toughness, both mentally and physically. For a portion of that game, we were an embarrassment."
Popovich also stated that the team will more than likely activate Cory Joseph to fill in for Jackson. The second-year guard averaged 2.0 points in 29 games during the 2011-12 season.
