To the excitement of its fans, The CW's Vampire Diaries is currently underway with the filming of its highly anticipated fifth season.

TV Guide reported that the program will be starting up three months after Silas got ahold of Stefan (Paul Wesley) and took him over.

Executive producer Caroline Dries stated that Stefan has been "been drowning, dying and coming back to life."

However, while the Salvatore brother suffers immensely, his sibling Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) seem to be sailing into the sunset in terms of their rekindled romance.

"Elena and Damon are a super-sexy couple and happy for once. Caroline is ready start school. Nobody knows Bonnie is dead, so it's bliss, but then there's Stefan just dying," Dries said.

On July 23, director Joshua Butler, took to Twitter to not only wish Wesley a happy birthday, but also to commend his hard work on season 5. To top it off, he even posted a photo of Stefan floating underwater.

"Happy Birthday to the awesome @Paul Wesley on the 1st shooting day of #TVD 5x02. Amazing actor and a real trooper."

The CW's Vampire Diaries is scheduled to air its fifth season on Thursday, October 10. Its spin-off series, The Originals, will begin season 1 on Tuesday, October 15.
