As Downton Abbey fans brace themselves for the sixth and final season, one of the actresses is accepting the fact that the series can't go on forever.

Everything Is 'Finite' On 'Downton Abbey'

On Friday, E! News posted a video with Elizabeth McGovern who plays Cora on the series. When she was promoting her film Woman in Gold, she explained how this just seems like the appropriate time to let the British drama run its course.

"I haven't taken a poll, but I think that the actors in general really feel as though it's the right time for it to end," the actress said. "I don't think anybody wanted it to go on beyond its sell-by date."

Is Maggie Smith NOT Planning To Leave 'Downton Abbey?'

McGovern then explained how the people on the series are changing and how that works well for the series.

"That is very much built into the story, the fact that their life as they know it is changing unrecognizably," she said. "And so that feels like a natural inclusion to the series as well, and there's something bittersweet about that. It was both happening in history and it's happening on the show so it's one of those magical things where the two things are really coinciding."

Executive producer Gareth Neame previously told the site that even though the show is doing well, it's best to let things go while it's at its best.

"I think our feeling is that it's good to quit while you're ahead," he said. "We feel the show is in incredible strong shape...the show is so popular globally, but the danger with this sort of thing is to let them go on forever."

Downton Abbey Season 6 is expected to premiere in the United States in January 2016 on PBS.
