WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED SEASON 2 , EPISODE 7, 'BLACK MAPS AND MOTEL ROOMS'

After an entire season of slowly building up to the drama and action, True Detective finally got to a moment that, as shocking as it was, appeared to be hinted at back in the first few episodes.

Bezzerides Infiltrates A Sex Party

The episode picked up with the aftermath of Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch), Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and Velcoro's (Colin Farrell) raid on the sex party and rescuing of Vera-and it appears to have been, ultimately, a very fatal mistake for the group. Because while it helped to finally start blowing their investigation into Caspere's murder wide open and truly exposed all the players in the overall corruption scheme, it also saw two of the season's most controversial deaths as well.

After getting their loved ones to safety, Velcoro and Bezzerides were also left to go on the run when the head of their secret operation, Katherine Davis (Michael Hyatt) was murdered-using one of Velcoro's own guns. However, the more shocking death was none other than Woodrugh's-after he was lured by his ex, Miguel (Gabriel Luna) into a confrontation with the corrupt Police Chief Holloway (Afemo Omilami), in an attempt to get back the contracts from the shady land deal. Woodrugh successfully defeated all his enemies-but upon emerging from underground he was shot dead in the back by Lieutenant Kevin Burris (James Frain).

The Shooting Impacts Everyone

Most interestingly, it appeared Woodrugh was only put into that situation by his own shame and reluctance to come out, as photos of him and Miguel were the ammo used to bring him into the situation.

Now, as the only one of the trio who was still in an admirable law enforcement position, it would appear that any chance Velcoro and Bezzerides have at solving the case before they too are attacked and the trail goes cold could be running out.

However, the show could try to make a repeat occurrence of what happened to Velcoro when he looked into Caspere's secret sex pad back in episode 2. There, he was accosted by a man in a bird mask, and shot twice in the chest- Those however, were riot bullets, which only left bruising and didn't kill him.

While fans did see an exit wound on Woodrugh's body (the shot went cleanly through him), which is something they never saw on Velcoro, allowing the character to still be alive, it should be noted that an IMDB page for the show shows that Kitsch is a part of the season for eight episodes, just like McAdams and Farrell. Barring a funeral scene, his appearance could prove to be a surprise as the criminals who tried to kill him potentially realize they screwed up the situation.
