Fear The Walking Dead continues to be set as far apart from its original companion series The Walking Dead as possible.

New Teaser Shows How Quickly Everything Changes On 'Fear The Walking Dead'

In a new interview with Variety, various cast and crew members sat down with the magazine to discuss the show, and once again, how the show differs from the original series, which picks up the action already in the midst of an apocalypse.

"Because we weren't starting with the zombie horde, one of the things that's important is feeling a sense of anxiety-apprehension of what's to come," showrunner Dave Erickson said.

The Apocalypse Is Something To Be Greatly Feared

The companion series has long been touted as picking up at the start of the outbreak, which keeps it differentiated from the initial series, which saw character who had already adapted to the situation and continue adapting to it as it changes. However, the new show starts with a deep look initially at the people who become affected by the apocalypse as it unfolds, and then are forced to deal with even greater catastrophe.

"What I wanted to explore was this idea of what makes us human," executive producer Adam Davidson said. "In the face of such a catastrophe, so we rise to the best of ourselves as human beings, or do we sink to the lowest? What you have to ask is: Who do you need to be more afraid of, the zombies or the other human being around you?"

Erickson also echoed how the show would change the dynamic as time went on, and would truly focus on the family drama being completely exacerbated by the onset of the epidemic.

"Even though we start from a very specific family-drama place, the difficulties and conflicts they have will be quickly exacerbated by the apocalypse," he said. "If the audience is coming to the show looking forward to seeing walkers, they're not going to be disappointed. But it's at a slightly different pace than the original show, and it also allows the characters to actually process what it would be like to have to put somebody down."

Fear the Walking Dead premieres Sunday, August 23 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
