The Vampire Diaries is a well-oiled machine when it comes to romance.

Damon Won't Be Looking For Love On 'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7, But Why?

Elena (Nina Dobrev) was linked to Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder). Plus when Dobrev portrayed her doppelgangers she was linked to other suitors too.

Anyway, with Elena in a deep sleep it seems as though the storyline will shift its focus mainly onto the romance that is brewing between Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan. Things between these two are easily at best considered complicated, but there is so much hope for them.

Enzo's Guitar Playing Talent Will Surface In New Season Of 'The Vampire Diaries'

TVD executive producer Caroline Dries dished to TV Guide about the future of Caroline and Stefan and it's looking quite promising.

"As much as there's chaos going around her, every time she looks at Stefan she gets butterflies," Dries commented about Caroline's feelings toward the brooding Salvatore brother.

"So, it's only a matter of time before it's like... 'You make me happy.' So, we'll see them get together soon," Dries shared.

They won't be a perfectly set couple though once Caroline stops trying to avoid him.

"Their relationship is coming in stages," Dries said, explaining, "Just because two people kiss doesn't mean they're going steady or whatever the phrase is now. So, they'll have their starts and stops a bit, but we'll explore each of those chapters of the relationship."

The series returns to The CW in the fall for season 7 on Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
