Nancy Lanza Taught Her Son To Shoot A Gun: Adam Lanza, Newton School Shooting
Nancy Lanza, the slayed mother of Sandy Hooker Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza, reportedly taught her son how to shoot guns and held weapons in her house, easily accessible for the 20-year-old, CBS reported Sunday.
In their "60 Minutes" report, the news station highlighted the fact that, as a fan of target shooting, Nancy would practice shooting weapons with Adam. The weapons found beside Adam's dead body the Newton, Conn., elementary school on Friday - where 20 children died plus teachers and other adults - were legally registered to Nancy in Connecticut, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.
Adam killed his mother at home before making his way to the Sandy Hook school where he went on a killing spree Friday. The 54-year-old was shot in the head several times, according to the State of Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Adam has Asperger's Syndrome, according to Nancy's friends, which is in the same spectrum of autism.
Children and adults with Asperger's have a normal range intellectual capacity but have an "impairment" in social interaction and communication skills, and they have restrictive interests such as a preference for routine and consistency and development of special interests, according to aspergersyndrome.org.
A friend of Nancy's told the New York Daily News that less than a week before the school shooting, the mother was afraid of "losing" Adam as he had long be troubled and his behavior gradually worsened.
"She just looked down at the glass and said, 'I don't know. I'm worried I'm losing him,'" said the friend, who asked not to be named, of the conversation held at the bar My Place in Newtown, Conn. "She said it was getting worse. She was having trouble reaching him."
The friend also added that Adam was prone to hurting himself for example by burning himself with a lighter.
All Newton public schools remain closed as of Dec. 17 with counseling services offered, according to the Sandy Hook Elementary School's website.
