It’s no secret Nicki Minaj raised a few eyebrows after she flaunted Meek Mill around following her decision to hide her relationship with Safaree Samuels for years. Now she is explaining why.

She revealed that it actually doesn’t have to do with Meek, specifically. She told GQ in the couple’s first interview together that she planned to go public with her relationship after her third album, The Pinkprint. But by the time it was released, she was with Meek and not Samuels.
She said that her being so open about her relationship with Meek after hiding Samuels has led fans to believe their love is a publicity stunt. So she cleared the air.

‘My decision to be public about my relationship came before I even met Meek. I was in another relationship and I said after I drop my bird album that I don’ care anymore what people think. I’m going to be vocal about who I’m with. It just so happens that I’m witha new guy.”
She added that when she first started to rise in the music scene, she was told to keep her love life on the low because she had to be more “appealing to men.”
“After you do that for ten years it becomes something you feel like you have to do. It’s difficult to break out of that box.”
She said now, the industry has changed and fans don’t care as much about her romantic life.
