ESPN issued an apology to Katherine Webb, the breakout star from Monday's BCS Championship game after the network's cameras panned over her and an announcer gushed over how "beautiful" and "lovely" she is.

Webb, 23, who is Miss Alabama 2012, attended the game to support her boyfriend AJ McCarron, the star quarterback for Alabama who trumped Notre Dame in Monday's game. Webb became an overnight sensation after ESPN announcer Brent Musburger pointed out her pageant-worthy good looks.

"You see that lovely lady there, that's AJ McCarron's girlfriend," Musburger announced. "Wow, I'm telling you. You quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women. Honest. What a beautiful woman....Whoa!"

Musburger's compliments immediately became a hot topic and critics panned the announcer, who is 50 years Webb's senior, for the comments. On Tuesday, ESPN issued an apology on Twitter for Musburgur having gone "too far" with the compliments.

"Have been asked on focus on @_KatherineWebb in BCS," ESPN vice president of communications Mike Soltys wrote on the social media site. "We always try to capture interesting storylines, and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far."

Webb appeared on "TODAY" on Wednesday to respond to the comments and the apology. She said she thinks the media has been "unfair" to Musburger.

"I think the media has been really unfair to him," Webb told Matt Lauer. "I think if he would have said something along the lines of, 'we were hot' or 'we were sexy' or made any derogatory statements like that, I think that would have been a little bit different. But the fact that he said we were beautiful and gorgeous, I don't see why any woman wouldn't be flattered by that."

Donald Trump also took notice of Webb and took to Twitter to sing her praises on Tuesday.

"Miss Alabama, Katherine Webb, has been a truly great representative of the Ms. USA Organization...We are proud of her!" he wrote. "What a great couple... Katherine Webb and AJ McCarron. They are both winners!"

Trump added that he would like to offer her a hosting gig at the next Miss USA Pageant.

"We are going to ask Katherine Webb to be a judge at the Miss USA pageant coming up in Las Vegas," he tweeted.

Webb confirmed to Lauer on "TODAY" that she has been invited by Trump to judge the next Miss USA pageant, but that she wanted to focus for now on the "real winners" of Monday's BCS Championship game- her boyfriend and his team.
