The Intersteller actor has traded his carefree rom com characters for more serious fare as of late, and according to Variety, the upcoming Marvel film was hoping to use McConaughey's dramatic chops to bring Guardian's next villain to life. McConaughey, however, decided to pass on the role.

While the search is still on for the film's big bad, the James Gunn helmed project has cast at least one mystery role. Oldboy actress Pom Klementieff is in talks to take on an unspecified role.

A follow up to Gunn's 2013 blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 will throw viewers back into the world Star-Lord. Hot off the heels of their defeat of Thanos, Peter Quill and his rogues gallery of unexpected heroes will take on their next threat in 2017.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will feature Pratt, Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Dave Bautista (Drax), and Zoe Saldana (Gamora).
