'Grey's Anatomy' Season 9 Spoilers: Lawsuit Settled & Award Money Announced [VIDEO]
In Thursday's episode of "Grey's Anatomy," news of the lawsuit settlement are announced on the same day that Meredith Grey ends the final trimester of her pregnancy.
A spoiler video for the Jan. 17 episode showed the doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital that were involved in the plane crash sitting in court following the judge's announcement about the lawsuit. Callie Torres then walked in the room and asked her colleagues, which included her partner Arizona Robbins, about the judge's decision. Robbins replied with "we won."
Derek Shepherd explained that the judge said the airline company had a history of mechanical problems with the plane. The problems were listed in public records and the hospital should have known about it, so the judge ruled the hospital negligent. When Torres asked about the reward, Robbins told her the judge is giving them $15 million - each.
The doctors do not look so excited in the video and actress Ellen Pompeo told TVLine it is because they all, except for Torres, see it as "blood money." They go out to celebrate anyways, by Torres' suggestion, but the night turns into "a very awkward dinner," Pompeo said.
"Grey's Anatomy" executive producer Shonda Rhimes spoke to TV Guide about Shepherd's long-awaited return to the operating room as a surgeon.
Released photos from episode 11's taping show Shepherd practicing muscle movement on the hand Torres operated on. Torres enlisted intern Shane to play what turns into a "heated match of ping pong" again his attending, TV Guide reported.
Shepherd will make his way back into the OR but Rhimes added, "it's not in the direction you think it's going to go."
"Derek getting back into surgery, while being very important, really turns out to be - I don't want to say minimized - but it gets overshadowed in the face of something else," Rhimes said.
Shepherd's sister Lizzie, played by Neve Campbell, is set to make an appearance in the next few episodes.
