5 Shot After MLK Parade in New Orleans, Details
Five people were wounded Monday in a shooting near a New Orleans intersection where a parade was held earlier to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to authorities.
Police spokesperson Remi Braden said the victims were all between the ages of 17 and 18.
A surveillance video from a grocery store where the teens had gathered in the Central City neighborhood showed a white car drive up to the front of the business and an occupant shoot them from the car's sunroof before the car drove away. The shooting took place less than an hour after a parade honoring Martin Luther King Jr., at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and LaSalle Street, according to WWLTV.
Investigators noted that none of the wounds are believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities believe the shooting was not related to the parade in which residents participated in the 27th annual march to King's statue on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, NOLA.com reported.
"It's the state of affairs in our nation that young men do not heed the words of Martin Luther King Jr.," Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.
Monday was the second time in American history that Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day coincided. The first was in 1997 when former President Bill Clinton was sworn-in to office for his second term.
Obama was officially sworn in for a second term on Sunday, Jan. 20, in accordance with the Constitution, which requires the presidential term to begin on that day. Monday's swearing-in was a symbolic ceremony held for the public.
