'Ben and Kate' Cancelled; Fox Pulls Show, Same as ABC's 'Don't Trust the B in Apt 23'
Fox announced Wednesday its decision to cancel the sibling comedy "Ben and Kate" due to weak play in terms of rating numbers.
"Ben and Kate" averaged around 3.1 million viewers whille factoring in DVR viewing, according to The Washington Post. Fox said it plans on airing the show's six remaining episodes at some time.
The show was up for Favorite New TV Comedy at the People's Choice Awards.
Removing "Ben and Kate" from its Tuesday comedy block, Fox will instead air two episodes of "Raising Hope" starting next week, according to CNN.
The network will be doubling "Hope" episodes through February until the return of "Hell's Kitchen" on Marck 12 at 8 p.m., which will then lead into "New Girl" and "The Mindy Project."
News of the show's cancellation came a day after ABC decided to end "Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23." The comedy averaged around 4.5 million viewers - reportedly a million more viewers than those who watched Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong's interview on Thursday, Jan. 17, the Post noted.
On Tuesday, one of the show's stars, James Van Der Beek, posted on Twitter a message revealing news of his show's cancellation.
"Sad to say ABC has pulled #Apt23 and will not be airing the 8 remaining episodes any time soon. Translation: we've basically been cancelled," the actor tweeted.
"I know most of you watched us on your own time & platform and that the competitive network scheduling game is irrelevant to you," he continued. "But network TV is a business dictated by Nielsen ratings. And while that's an antiquated business model, it's the only one they've got."
To take a jab at the reportedly low ratings for his own show, "Ben and Kate" star Nat Faxon tweeted back in December, "Have you ever met anyone who owns a Nielsen box?"
