Scandal star Kerry Washington rarely opens up about her personal life, but she made an exception earlier this week when she gushed about her husband, NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha.

What’s Next For Olivia Pope & Fitz?

She was giving a speech as she accepted an honor at the Baby2Baby event in Culver City, Ca.

Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes (who is also the brains behind successful ABC shows Grey’s Anatomy and How To Get Away With Murder) began the festivities when she presented Rhimes with The Giving Tree Award for works he has done with the less fortunate. She revealed what happened when she found out Washington was expecting her first child back in 2014.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for the news that someone aside from my sisters was going to have a baby than I was when Kerry Washington told me she was pregnant. We were inner trailer, and I think I danced. Or maybe I jumped up and down, but whatever I did, her trailer was rocking.”

Washington then opened up about her husband.

“I’m so grateful for my family who is there tonight— for my amazing husband who is here though our bathroom exploded today. He figured out a way to solve that problem— he’s the real gladiator.”

She also gave props to her mother, who she credits as the one who got “me from the Bronx to here.”

She opened up about growing up in the Bronx area and is now trying to “make sense” of how she ended up living in Beverly Hills as a huge superstar.

Women like Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama and even actor Tony Goldwyn who plays opposite her in Scandal thanked her for her efforts in a video.
