TLC’s popular prime time documentary show, “My Strange Addiction” profiles people with some quirky habits. Meet Lisa, a 43-year-old mother from Detroit, Michigan who is addicted to eating cat hair.

Lisa started eating cat hair fifteen years ago. She endears herself as “Mama cat with her kittens” and said that eating cat hair strengthens her bond to her pets. When asked why she partakes in eating cat hair Lisa said, “Just chewing it is relaxing. It’s a comforting feeling, her fur is such an interesting texture. So soft and puffy like cotton candy.” Lisa usually grooms her cats directly from her tongue.

Every day, Lisa makes her way around her home grabbing the shed cat hair from the floor and on the back of her sofa, but suggests the best ones are still on the cat.

Lisa feels obligated to groom her cat “like a mama cat would her kitten”, but draws the line at “licking the cat’s butt or in between the paws that go in the litter box”, she described.

“I’m not licking her butt!”, she said.

In the documentary, Lisa explained exactly how she eats the fur balls.

“I’ll kind of break it apart and then just put it in my mouth. I’ll chew it up a little bit and then take it out and maybe mess with it a little and put it back in.”, she said.

While viewers may take Lisa’s addiction as just something entertaining to watch, eating cat hair can lead to serious health issues. Lisa’s addiction is similar to an obsessive compulsive disorder called Trichotillomania. According to the Belgravia Center, the condition is an obsession with hair where people tug, pull or twist their hair out. They found that if not treated, eating hair can cause serious digestive problems like developing stomach ulcers.
