China Rent a Boyfriend; Bring One Home for Chinese New Year
With the Luna New Year approaching, many single women are reportedly tempted to bring fake boyfriends as they dates to accompany them on family visits across China.
There is a lot of pressure on Chinese women to marry young and a recent report even called unmarried women over the age of 27 "leftover women." Women are expected to focus on having children and face the pressure of showing their parents the prospect of a family. They face a strict societal deadline to find a husband before they turn 30, according to BBC.
Many single women are ask male friends to escort them on family visits and some turn to the number of young men offering themselves for hire on the Internet. For women who do not have someone to ask to make the trip with them, dozens of rental services and individuals advertise their escort services online.
A search for "renting a boyfriend for going home" on the popular Chinese shopping website Taobao yields more than six million results, according to The West Australian. Prices vary - with the lowest around $50 a day- but one service on Taobao, someone using the name 51 Haoquan and claiming 17 sales this year, offered male escorts in the eastern province of Jiangsu for 2000 yuan ($308) per day or 50 yuan per hour. The ad said hugs, hand-holding and goodbye kisses were free extras for clients.
Sex is not an option in the ads but the sellers do get quite specific in other aspects of the sale. The news report stated that in some instances, a man will accompany a girl to dinner and charge $8 for a kiss on the cheek. If he stays overnight with his client's family for Chinese New Year, he charges $80 a night to sleep in his own bed and $95 to sleep on the couch.
The fake boyfriends also offer services such as going shopping, watching movies or attending parties.
The Luna New Year falls on Monday, Feb. 11.
