As Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman become bigger global stars, one starts to wonder if we might get a Sherlock movie one day!

How The 'Sherlock' Co-Creator Gets Inside The 'Deductive' Mind Of Sherlock Holmes

Cumberbatch and Freeman, who star in Sherlock as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively, may see themselves on the big screens as their characters someday. Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss recently spoke with The Mirror and suggested that a movie may be coming in the future.

"Of course we could do a movie but it would have to be a story of sufficient scale to make that move, because they're already very big, very expensive and very movie-like," Gatiss admitted, discussing the show's 90-minute episodes. "We don't want to just send the cast away on holiday."

What We Know So Far About 'Sherlock' Season 4

The series just aired a holiday special called The Abominable Bride which set Sherlock and Watson in Victorian England.

As for whether the show has a future beyond the upcoming fourth season, Gatiss is uncertain given Cumberbatch and Freeman's busy schedules.

"We're doing three more episodes of Sherlock next spring, then we'll see. Obviously Benedict and Martin are both hugely successful film stars, but they're both very keen to do more," Gatiss admitted. "It is, genuinely, increasingly difficult to get together. It's taken us a long time to get these dates fixed. It's like a chess game and you fix one bit and something else moves. We all certainly want to do more."

No matter what form Sherlock takes, fans will likely be on board every step of the way.

Sherlock season 4 does not yet have a specific premiere date for either the U.K. or the U.S.
