Manchester City vs Aston Villa is the big English Premier League game taking place on Monday night. Reigning EPL champions City are looking less and less likely to be able to retain their title, with Manchester United now 15 points clear of City in second place. City do have this game in hand so can cut the deficit to 12 points tonight - still a massive margin with just 10 games of the season to go.

In team news, Villa will be hopeful that captain Ron Vlaar will overcome a calf injury and feature in tonight’s game. That injury made him miss the Arsenal game, but he could be fit for today’s big game.

Meanwhile, Manchester City will likely miss captain Vincent Kompany who is still struggling with a calf problem. Gareth Barry should be fit however and will be lining up against his former club. He has been out with an ankle injury but is thought to be fit and ready tonight.

In November Villa lost 5-0 to City - which in fact dropped them into the relegation zone. Villa have been around the safety mark since then, but are still at the moment in the bottom three.

They are currently placed in 18th position, just a point above 19th placed Reading, and level on points with Wigan in 17th. Wigan, however, have a 4 goal difference advantage over Villa. Should Villa be able to take anything from today’s game they would move into the safety zone. However, a loss, and especially a heavy loss, could be hugely detrimental to their survival hopes.

City meanwhile have been trying to look up and catch United, but now they are being forced to look behind them too. Spurs’ win has lifted them up to third place and they now sit just two points below City. Any run of poor form now for City could see them even lose out on second place as the season reaches its final run in.
