Kendrick Lamar delivered a memorable performance of "The Blacker The Berry" and "Alright" during Monday night's Grammy Awards, which was just what fans were expecting.

Prior to Lamar's performance, show producer Ken Ehrlich and Recording Academy CEO/chairman Neil Portnow spoke out, revealing Lamar would be a performer worth watching.

"It’s provocative," show producer Ken Ehrlich told Billboard Magazine on Monday. "It is overtly political and it is overtly provocative, and I think if nothing else it’s going to give people something to think about and talk about."

Meanwhile, Portnow added that the performance by Lamar would be "powerful."

"There are some artists that have a point of view in terms of bringing things to the public for conversation and creating awareness and a dialogue, and we happen to think that’s healthy," he explained. "Obviously we’re on primetime TV and we have to be respectful of the laws, but I think it’s going to be a very powerful performance."

And boy was it, with Lamar (and dancers) performing in custom as prisoners AND tribal dancers. Lamar even sported makeup that gave him the appearance of having a black eye.
